Drag Queens Last Supper
“Drag queen’s last supper is digital art work which was shot over two days and constructed over many weeks with the wonderful assistance of one drag queen and their thirteen identities.”
Drag Queens Last Supper
This photographic montage piece directly and unequivocally challenges the widely accepted notion of religious doctrine with regards to gender binary iconography and visual representation.
Nic Gaunt confronts the outdated imagery held in esteem by religious groups and faiths. He unashamedly questions the practice of placing relevance on this outdated imagery within the context of a contemporary socio-sexual framework.
The artwork takes a large metaphorical hammer and smashes down the gender binary wall which has been constructed and perpetuated by religious organizations over millennia.
From the rubble left behind emerges the notion of alternative sexualities and a reworking of religious rhetoric to embrace a modern construct.
The question of gender and sexuality, in the context of a highly regarded religious masterpiece, is subverted in a playful, lush and flamboyant manifestation in Gaunt’s pastiche of da Vinci’s Last Supper.
The photographic work appears, on the surface, to be a sumptuous, inviting work to view but on closer inspection contains a sharp social commentary which is delivered in an unabashedly honest fashion.
The singularity of the character becomes apparent upon even closer inspection and is a technique employed by the artist to reinforce the notion of identifying with multiple sexual identities and the ability of an individual to operate outside of the constraints of pedagogical dogma.
