Taming of the Robot
This Sci fi pastiche is a playfully futuristic take on an imagined world.
In an imagined future scenario, the overtly sexualised female protagonists have taken control of the mechanised world. They have embraced their sexuality and weaponised it to win dominance of their mechanically masculine robot masters.
Nic Gaunt employs retro iconography to instil a feeling of nostalgia and create a narrative which is visually relatable.
The female players are an homage to Jane Fonda’s iconic Barbarella in the 1968 ground-breaking cult classic science fiction film of that name. The work echoes the film in its liberation, ownership and empowerment of female sexuality.
Parallels are drawn with fetishist elements and tongue in cheek satire.
Contemporary female characters are still often made to conform to male dictated ideals of sexual desire; but in this depiction she is to be viewed as a refreshingly progressive symbol.
Let’s hope that she can destroy the tyrannical Durand Durand and save humanity.
